A full day seminar presented by Sinan Si Alhir. This workshop is being coordinated by Dr. Marc Haines, Assistant Professor in Management Information Systems, Lubar School of Business, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Overview
The software industry is looking for ways to create quality code in an effective, efficient manner that is rapid, repeatable, and reliable. Of the many methods that have arisen to improve software development, Scrum is emerging as one that is grounded in decades of Lean Thinking. Lean Thinking focuses on delivering value to business and customers while improving process and eliminating waste. Scrum manifests these principles and has emerged as the premier Agile software development method for project management.
Topics
•Lean and Agility
This session provides an introduction to Lean and Agile principles. We will start with the realities of software development that are driving the rationale for focusing on Lean and Agile principles. We will then review these principles as the foundation for the rest of the workshop.
•Scrum
This session provides an overview of Scrum, including its historical roots and the Scrum Framework. We will focus on introducing Scrum roles, activities, and artifacts as well as how they are integrated into a framework. This will provide a foundation for delving into the details of the framework in the rest of the workshop.
•Products
This session focuses on Scrum’s Product, Release Planning, Product Backlog, Sprint Backlog, Stories, and Tasks. We will focus on projects and their results (products). Product requirements are organized into a Product Backlog, and project work is organized into a Sprint Backlog. Requirements are commonly known as Stories, and the work items are commonly known as Tasks.
•Execution
This session focuses on Scrum’s Sprint Planning, Daily Scrum, Sprint Review, and Sprint Retrospective. We will focus on the planning of project work using Sprint Planning and reviewing the product using Sprint Reviews. We will also focus on monitoring the “heart beat” of a project using Daily Scrums and on improving the process using Sprint Retrospectives.
•Mastering Scrum
This session focuses on the Scrum Master role, Team Development, and Scaling Scrum. We will focus on the Scrum Master role that integrates the Product Owner, who is responsible for requirements and the product resulting from the project, and the Development Team, which is responsible for transforming the requirements into the product. At first glance, the Scrum Master role may seem more or less like a “traditional” project manager; however, we will discuss the nuances involved in successfully leveraging this role for successful projects.
