A full day seminar featuring Dr. Donald Ferguson, IBM. This seminar is coordinated and co-sponsored by Dr. Mariam Zahedi, Wisconsin Distinguished Professor at the UWM School of Business.

Overview

Web Application Servers and the programming models that they implement are critical elements for designing and deploying eBusiness Applications. In this seminar, we will examine Web Application Servers from "Soup to Nuts." First, we will start with a sample application scenario and explain the design and development of the "parts" that comprise an eBusiness application. These include: Static and Dynamic Pages Java Server Pages and Servlets XML Request/Document Handlers and the Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) HTTP Session State Enterprise JavaBeans Adaptor/Connector Beans Message Processing Application and Database Integration The seminar will then discuss the system topologies and designs for configuring scalable, highly available eBusiness sites. We will end with discussion of system management and problem determination issues.

About the speaker

Donald Ferguson joined IBM in 1987, and has led research and development efforts in the areas of operating system perform-ances, database tuning, scalable transaction processing, object transaction monitors and web application servers. Since 1993, Don has been the technical lead for IBMs Component Broker and WebSphere family of products. WebSphere is a family of "web" application servers that provides an infrastructure and programming model for integrating new and pre-existing applications with the Internet, providing business-to-person and business-to-business solutions. Don holds approximately a dozen granted or pending U.S. Patents and has authored more than 4 technical publications. In 1998 he was name a Distinguished Engineer, IBMs highest technical position. Don is also a member of the IBM Academy of Technology. He received a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Columbia University in 1989. His Ph.D. applied concepts and algorithms from economics to resource management problems in distributed systems and computer networks. This included work on system load balancing, data replication and file placement and network flow control.
